HandmadeQT: Football Cocoon

I had to make a quick gift for my husband's co-worker baby boy. I wanted to try something different, I've also seen lots of props for baby pictures using crochet items. So here it is, a baby cocoon in the shape of a football. Including matching beanie. Hope you like it. Here's my own written pattern.

Supplies:
Red Heart Chocolate Brown Baby Soft Yarn
crochet hooks H and I
stitch marker
Caron White yarn
yarn needle


Beanie:
 start with hook h

magic circle or chain 6 sl st to join
Row 1: 2 hdc in each st sl st to join
Row 2: 1 hdc in the next st, 2hdc in the next st, sl st to join.
Row 3: 1 hdc in the next 2st, 2hdc in the next st, sl st.
Row 4-7: continue to increase each row and sl st in all around.
Row 8-12: sc each round, sl st, finish off.

Cocoon:

start w h until row 9, use I hook
magic circle of 10.
Row 1: 2 hdc each around, sl st tight.
Row 2: 1 hdc in next st, 2 hdc in the next st, sl st.
* Row3: 1hdc in the next 3sts, 2hdc in the next st, sl st.
Row 4: 1 hdc in the next 4 sts, 2hdc in the next st, sl st.
* Row 5-9: continue to add sts in between 2hdcs, until you get  1 hdc in the next 8 sts, 2hdc in the next st. sl st.
Row 10- 19: dc all around, til you reach desired height. For newborn its 19-21in in total length.
* Row 3-4, Row 15-16, change color to white to create bands.
Row 20 sc all around, sl st and finish off. weave in ends.
Take white yarn and use it to make details.
